Taylor Dent's appearance at the Tennis Express store was amazing. He spent time with fans and signed autographs. Thanks to Wilson for helping us with the event.

Dent was in Houston this week to compete at the US Men's Clay Court Championships at River Oaks. Unfortunately, he had to retire from the tournament due to an injury. You can read more about what happened at Tennis Now news.

Meet Babolat Player Fernando Gonzalez at Tennis Express

Babolat player Fernando Gonzalez will be visiting Tennis Express on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 7:00pm.

Fernando Gonzalez is in Houston this week to compete at the Men’s US Clay Court Championships at River Oaks and will be visiting Tennis Express during the tournament.

Gonzalez is currently ranked at No. 11 in the world and throughout his career he has defeated many former number-one players, including Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Roger Federer. Fernando Gonzalez has helped raise donations for the survivors of the earthquake that devasted Chile, his home country, earlier this year. Donations will be accepted at the event and Tennis Express will match the funds raised and donate it to help the survivors of the earthquake.

On April 6, Fernando Gonzalez will attend a VIP Meet and Greet at Tennis Express, followed by an autograph session for the general public.

Luxilon Doubles champions Bob and Mike Bryan will be visiting Tennis Express on Monday, April 5, 2010 from 6-7:00pm.

The Bryan Brothers are in Houston this week to compete at the Men’s US Clay Court Championships at River Oaks and will be visiting Tennis Express during the tournament.

The Bryan Brothers have won over 58 tour titles and hold Grand Slam victories at the French Open (2003), US Open (2005, 2008), Australian Open (2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010), and Wimbledon (2006). These famous tennis twins were voted ATPWorldTour.com Fans' Favorite Team from 2005-09 and ATP Doubles Team of Year in 2003, 2005-07, and 2009. While not winning titles and slamming volleys, they have been working on a music career and released their debut album “Let It Rip” featuring David Baron.

On April 5, the Bryan Brothers will attend a VIP Meet and Greet at Tennis Express, followed by an autograph session for the general public.

Meet Wilson Player Taylor Dent at Tennis Express

Wilson player Taylor Dent will be visiting Tennis Express on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 6-7:00pm.

Taylor Dent is in Houston this week to compete at the Men’s US Clay Court Championships at River Oaks and will be visiting Tennis Express during the tournament.

Dent has 4 ATP singles titles in Newport (2002), Bangkok (2003), Memphis (2003), Moscow (2003), and was a semifinalist in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Dent underwent major back surgery that had people thinking he was not going to be able to play, but since he has been able to come back and perseveres for top spots. He is currently ranked 83rd in the world. He recently had a son with his wife, Jennifer Hopkins a former WTA pro, this past January.

On April 3, Taylor Dent will attend a VIP Meet and Greet at Tennis Express, followed by an autograph session for the general public.

Andy Roddick and NBA superstar Dwyane Wade tested each others' sporting skills at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Roddick broke serve four times in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sergiy Stakhovsky to reach the Sony Ericsson Open fourth round.

Roddick came within two points of knocking off Miami Heat all star Wade in a game of H-O-R-S-E.

"I was so close. I could have kept it to two feet and hoped that he had an aberration of a jump shot. But wasn't meant to be," Roddick said. "I mean, at least I made him go to like the layups and the fancy, you know, all that stuff that I just he just took it out of my hands."

In the end, despite Roddick's earlier lead in the game, Dwayne Wade won by shooting from a seated position on court.

Guess, Roddick has more to worry about since he'll have to beat Benjamin Becker to reach his sixth Sony Ericsson Open quarterfinal.

The ATP Doubles Champions, the Bryan Brothers will be profiled on this Sunday's episode of 60 minutes. The Bryan Brothers have been captivating audience for a while now with they in sync grace on the the court.

Also, the twins Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan are closing in on the all-time record for most doubles titles held by Todd Woodbridge and Mark Wooforde. The record setting twins are the focus of a 60 Minutes piece by Leslie Stahl set to air this Sunday at 7 p.m. Eastern time.

Del Potro Talks About Chilean Earthquake

Juan Martin del Potro recently discussed how he was awakened by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile.

From the ATP website:

"Such great force was felt in the neighbouring city of Buenos Aires, Argentina where he is currently recovering from a right wrist injury.

“I was sleeping when at approximately 3:30am I started feeling dizzy and also hearing loud noises. The first thing I thought was that I had left the windows open and the wind was making the noise when it hit against the walls. I live on a high floor of an apartment building so I didn't think this was out of the ordinary."

"The noise was quite loud and it woke me up, so I decided to see what was happening. I was feeling very dizzy and soon realised it wasn't the wind making all the noise. Everything in my apartment was shaking and when I walked into my living room, the curtains and the decorations on the walls were shaking as well. This went on for 5-6 minutes."

"I am very saddened that the second natural disaster has taken place in such a short amount of time in the Americas, affecting so many people. I have traveled to Chile many times in my life and love the people and the country.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Chile today and I pray that as many people as possible will escape this terrible disaster safely.”

Serbia defeats U.S. in Davis Cup

For the first time since 2005 the U.S. team were eliminated in the first round of the Davis Cup while Serbia advances to face Croatia. It took Novak Djokovic, ranked No. 2, needed 4 hours and 16 minutes to outlast the 20th-ranked John Isner, who was making his Davis Cup debut.

Also, the U.S. team played without both Andy Roddick and James Blake for the first time since 2000.

The match between Djokovic and Isner was a grueling one. After the match, John Isner said, "I knew I had to play my best tennis to have a chance against Djokovic. He returns the serve real well, and my hat is off to him for the victory."

Nadal Returns to Indian Wells

On his Facebook page, Rafael Nadal said, “Practice going well and I'll be back in Indian Wells for sure, last week was great, with great practice and a lot of work well done."

Nadal has not played a match since retiring from the Australian Open quarterfinal over a month ago against Andy Murray.

It is going to great to see him back on court with his new Babolat AeroPro Drive GT racquet. Nadal hasn’t been doing too and has recently lost his second place ranking to Serbian Novak Djokovic.

How do you think he will do at Indian Wells? Will he be able to regain his position in the ATP rankings.

Following Roger Federer’s trip to Ethiopia, Serena Williams became the second tennis player to visit Africa this month.

Serena visited Kenya this week to help open The Serena Williams Secondary School – an institute she helped fund. This is Serena’s second school in the country, and she vowed to continue her philanthropic work there.

“I’m very happy to be here and, besides winning the Australian Open, this is more victory for me,” said Serena. “I will always hold this school dear to me and I hope that I’ll get more chances to continue with this venture.”

The new Secondary School will become the main center for second level education. It was built through a partnership between the Build African Schools initiative and Hewlett Packard and is designed to empower African students through education.

US Indie band Vampire Weekend have released a tennis-themed video for their upcoming single “Giving Up the Gun” from their latest album Contra.

The video features cameos by actor Jake Gyllenhaal, Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, rapper Lil Jon, and Rza of the Wu Tang Clan, and the video is already on its way to cult status judging by the 50,000 views.

In the surreal video Jenny Murray beats one tennis opponent after another – including a samurai, a motorcycle-helmeted doubles pair, and a hot-dog happy Jonas bro – as the band play the chilled track.

According to Spinner UK: Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig said,“‘Giving Up the Gun’ just means turning your back on aggression and selfishness. The heroine of the video isn’t an amazing tennis player, but she has heart.”

Perhaps, we can all learn something from the video and use it in our game.

Federer Pulls out of Dubai Championships

Roger Federer has made a surprise withdrawal from Dubai after contracting a lung infection which doctors say will take a fortnight to clear.

According to the ATP, he picked up the problem last week after returning from Ethiopia.

His place in the draw will be replaced by Tommy Robredo.

If he makes his recovery in two weeks, he’ll play Indian Wells.

It’s no secret that Shakira enjoys watching the Spaniard and tennis hunk Rafael Nadal play his matches. Shakira watched Nadal beat Nikolay Davydenko in Abu Dhabi in December 2008 after doing a concert there.

Recently, the New York Post mentioned that Shakira and Rafa were seen in Barcelona at a cozy dinner together.

Apparently, they were together filming a music video. According to the New York Post, a witness stated:

“There was just the two of them at the table together. They were whispering and all smiles. It definitely looked like they are more than just friends. They were there for a few days shooting."

Is Serena Williams Learning How to Do Nails?

I found this hilarious story on Globalgrind about Serena’s journey to become a nail technician. After the Australian Open, she apparently enrolled into a beauty program and she must complete 240 hours to become a certified nail technician.

She also seems to be having a great time. According to Serena:

“Today was my first day and boy was I excited! When I got there, they immediately had us do pedicures on each other. I wanted to make sure I did it just the way the real salons do it, so I began with asking the girl if she wanted any water to drink. I was so relieved when she said no, because honestly, I didn’t have any to give her. Then I asked her to pick a color and she said French!! I've never done french, but I was determined to not butcher it. Luckily, thanks to my weekly pedicures I took my time and it came out great. I know it wasn’t just me thinking I did good because all of the other girls kept asking if I had done this before. They thought I was on that show called "I get that a lot!"

Serena Williams will be coming out with a nail collection from HairTech. This is probably her way of learning the business from the ground up.

Native Houstonian Michael Russel makes it to First Ever ATP Quaterfinal

American player and Native Houstonian Michael Russell has advanced into his first ever ATP tour quarterfinals at the SAP Open today with a 6-4, 7-5 win over another veteran, Belgian Xavier Malisse.

According to Adjusting the Net,

“At 31, Russell is the oldest playing American on the tour and even though he may not have received the attention of Andy Roddick or James Blake, it’s definitely admirable to see someone grind it on the tour for so long. As Russell said after his win today, “I work hard, I love the game and I always check my ego at the door, and if I’m playing a Future, Challenger or ATP event I always feel the same out there.”

Michael Russell is scheduled to face Sam Querrey.

In this year’s Sports Illustrated Issue, Ana Ivanovic unveils her face and figure to the world. The day after Adidas announced a life-long contract with the tennis star, Sports Illustrated revealed her photo shoot on their site.

Clijsters Immortalized as a Barbie doll

The U.S. Open champion, Kim Clijsters was immortalized today as a Barbie doll, and her daughter Jada is also now available in a mini-version of the doll as well.

The doll was revealed today on the opening day of the world's largest toy fair in Nuremburg, Germany. She is the first female athlete to be immortalized by the world's leading doll brand.

Clijsters said in a statement:

"When I was a young girl I played with my Barbie dolls ... My family means everything to me, so I was really excited when I found out that Jada would also receive her very own 'Jada Barbie' doll."

Serena Williams v. Justine Henin in Australian Open Final, Who’s Your Pick?

Tonight is the women’s finals of the Australian Open and what an exciting finale it will be. Tennis can not get any better. This is the match we all wanted to see when we first heard that Justine Henin was coming back to tennis. Luckily, the tennis gods allowed it to happen.

Serena Williams will face her rival Justine Henin with her Wilson K Factor KBlade Team racquet. In her last match, Williams initially struggled during the first sets against Na Li but she managed to regain focus and plowed through the end with a titillating win. Her determination to defend her title simply overwhelmed her opponent.

It wasn’t an easy road for Justin Henin either. It was an extremely tough path with wins over Elena Dementieva, Yanina Wickmayer and Nadia Petrova before skating through Zheng Jie the other day in the semifinals.

The formerly-retired Belgian definitely has a difficult match ahead of her. Luckily, Henin has had some court time and has been able to work out the kinks and clear the cobwebs a bit. And she just played the best two sets in her crushing win over Zheng Jie.

But she will be facing Serena, a tennis player with confidence, experience and power. Serena also has a history of winning at the Australian Open-- she just won the doubles title (again).

During Rafael Nadal's second round match at the Australian Open a woman in the stands yelled, "hey, Nadal, will you marry me?.

The crowd and the Eurosport announcers broadcasting the match found the woman's proposal humorous. At first Nadal ignored the question, probably trying to stay focused on returning serve, but when everyone laughed he seemed to be start blushing. He waved his hand and then burst into a big grin.

Britain's Prince William made a surprise visit at the Rod Laver Arena to watch the Men's singles match between Roger Federer and Victor Hanescu at the Australian Open tennis championship in Melbourne.

The prince arrived fashionably late--75 minutes -- to Federer's match and was greeted with a warm ovation from the crowd .

After the match, he met with Roger Federer and Serena Williams privately. One must wonder if William told Federer that his great-grandfather, like him, played Wimbledon too? Read more about this here.

Justine Henin Doing Great with her Wilson Tour BLX racquet at the Australian Open

Last night, Justine Henin played a brilliant game against Elena Dementieva in two tight sets with new Wilson Tour BLX racquet. The match lasted almost three hours with so many games going to deuce.

Yet one still had to feel sorry for Dementieva. She couldn't figure out how to keep Henin at bay. She was unable to keep Henin on her heels.

Henin started to cramp late in the second set but she was still able pull off a win and remain to compete in the Australian Open.

Federer chats with Tiger, predicts he'll Return to Golf

Roger Federer says he's contacted his buddy Tiger Woods by phone and predicts he will be back soon “as the wonderful golfer we know.”

The tennis star admitted in an interview published Friday that Woods is going through a difficult time with his career and most importantly, his family.

According to the interview:

“The tabloids are going crazy, sponsor contracts are falling apart. ... I’ve always been aware that the image you patiently construct for an entire career can be ruined in a minute,” Federer said. “It scares you a bit, but that’s the way things are.”

Woods hasn’t been seen in public since the accident, and other friends have said they have tried — unsuccessfully — to reach him.

It's great that Roger Federer is being supportive of his buddy, Tiger Woods.

Serena makes it to Sydney final

Serena Williams beat France's Avarane Rezai in Sydney final with her Wilson K Factor KBlade Team 104 tennis racquet.

Sharapova Signs $70 Million Deal with Nike

Maria Sharapova has signed another sponsorship deal with Nike for an eight-year $70 million agreement. The deal also includes a line of dresses designed by the tennis star herself.

She currently makes close to $22 million a year in prize money and from endorsing companies (Tiffany & Co, Sony Ericsson and Canon). She consistently ranks as the highest paid-female athlete of the world.

Apparently, according to Max Eisenbud, Sharapova’s agent, Maria Sharapova might drop some endorsements in favor of agreements that give her a percentage of sales. She already has an equity agreement in place with Cole Haan, a Nike subsidiary and US clothing, shoe, handbag and accessory designer.

Berdych using Head Racquet at Brisbane. Is he leaving Dunlop?

Is Tomas Berdych hanging up his Dunlop Aerogel 200 tennis racquet? He was recently seen using a Head Racquet at Brisbane International.

So far Tommy Haas left Dunlop for Head and recently James Blake was seen playing with the new Wilson BLX 6.1 Tour 90 ? Is it possible that Berdych has jumped ship as well.

James Blake was recently seen playing with the new Wilson BLX 6.1 Tour 90 at the Tournament in Brisbane. It has been confirmed that he has left Dunlop but has not signed any deals with Wilson yet.

Tennis Express Named Retailer of the Year

The award was announced in the Tennis Industry’s RSI’s “Champions of Tennis” awards issue. The award is given both in recognition to our company’s commitment to customer service and its national level of sales.

According to USPTA CEO Tim Heckler, “Tennis Express’ commitment to excellence and quality has resulted in one of the most successful, largest Pro/Specialty tennis shops in the country.”

The award also recognizes Tennis Express’ continued involvement in the community including donating to the Houston NJTL, supporting the Houston Tennis Association and hosting clinics with pros like James Blake.

Andy Roddick and Some Koala Love

Andy Roddick and his wife Brooklyn Decker visited the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Australia this week and naturally the press accompanied the pair as they held the cute koalas. However, during an interview, he was forced out of the limelight as the animals put on their own show for the media.

Djokovic Coming to the Big Screen (and little screen)

Novak Djokovic will be starring in a 10-part Serbian mini-series about the life of Yugoslav King Aleksandar I.

It comes as no surprise that Nole will be playing the role of the king. His brother Dordje will be playing Aleksandar as a “young man.” Because, you know, Nole is so dang old (the King was assassinated at age 45.

A message on Novak’s official website hints that he’s taking Hollywood by storm, hitting the big screen in Iron Man 2 as well:

The world number three has got acting offers. Novak said he had an offer for a major role in a series and a smaller role in a Hollywood movie, as well as in a series about King Aleksandar Karadjordjevic.

He should appear in the sequel of the Hollywood action hit “Iron Man” with Robert Downey Jr. in the title role. The world premiere of the film is expected in early May 2010.

Roddick Gets New Super-Tight Wardrobe from Lacoste

When Andy Roddick arrived in Brisbane, Australia last week for the ATP season opener, his luggage wasn't there to greet him. So, Lacoste, being a motherly sponsor, sent the tennis player a couple of their clothes to practice in until his luggage arrived.

Thankfully, Roddick tweeted this picture.

How did he manage to put these clothes on without tearing the shirt? Luckily, his lack of appropriate apparel didn't prevent Roddick from winning his first match of the season and starting off 2010 with a victory.

Recently Serena Williams was also named the Associated Press's Female Athlete of the Year.

Of her win despite her behavior at the US Open this year, she said:

$143, 000 to Insure Murray's Ferrari F430

Andy Murray recently picked up a second-hand Ferrari F430, reportedly at a significant discount from the list price of a new F430, however it didn’t remain a bargain by the time the insurance costs were factored in.

Of course Murray is only 22 years old, passed his driving test just 5 months ago and is a celebrity driver, which makes the potential compensation costs far higher than the average young male driver if a third party was injured during an accident.

The world No. 4 tennis star earned more than $3.23m in 2009, so perhaps $319,200 to own a F430 doesn’t sound so bad, but it still seems like a ridiculous premium to pay especially given how few miles he is likely to cover in 2010.

He’s over in Miami at the moment training with his support team, so it’s currently costing him $478.80 for every day that it’s parked in the garage. Just think about that next time you complain about your own insurance premiums.

Night Tennis by Sony Ericsson

In an effort to raise awareness of Sony Ericsson tennis events around the world, the company has created night tennis.

Set at night clubs in tour spots like Miami, the exhibition uses UV lights, glowing tennis balls with comet trails, neon lines, new fashions and DJ booths to reinvent tennis for a younger audience. It's TRON meets Jersey Shore meets Andre Agassi's wardrobe circa 1989. Yet, despite that description, it's still pretty awesome:

Today on Facebook, Roger Federer and company treated his fans to a great holiday photo of their family. According to his facebook post:

"Many friends and fans have asked for an updated picture of our girls so we thought we'd post this picture for the holiday season. Our entire family wishes you a safe and happy 2010!"

Roger Federer finished the 2009 year by ranking as World No 1. and was selected Tuesday as the International Tennis Federation's world champions of 2009. Roger had a great year and we wish him and his family the best for the holidays.

Homer does Tennis in 12th Season

I love tennis and I am always searching for instances of when the sport I love intersects with my other joys like The Simpsons. This morning I found this clip from an episode of the Simpson's titled "Tennis the Menace" featuring Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Venus Williams and Serena Williams.

There is nothing that makes me happier than when tennis meets popular culture. Of course, it isn't always perfect but anything that helps tennis gain more visibility then great.

Earlier this month, I discovered the anime "Prince of Tennis" and now finding out that one of America's longest running cartoons featured tennis, makes me proud to be tennis fan.

Gonzalez, Querrey Coming to Houston

The singles field for next year’s US Men’s Clay Court Championship is beginning to take shape with commitments from World No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez and the No. 2 ranked American Sam Querrey to participate in the 2010 event from April 5-11 at River Oaks Country Club.

Gonzalez and Querrey are the first singles players to commit to play in the 2010 event. The World No. 1 team of Bob and Mike Bryan has committed to return to River Oaks Country Club to defend their US Men’s Clay Court Championship doubles title in 2010.

Since TennisExpress is based in Houston, TX, we are looking forward to having these top players grace our city. It's always wonderful, when H-town is able to bring top athletes to the city. We will keep you up to date when the tournament starts.

Tiger Beats Federer for Athlete of the Decade

So, Roger Federer was listed third in AP's Athletes of the Decade today. Tiger Woods was first and Lance Armstrong came in second.

What is this crap? How can golf be considered a sport? Don't get me wrong, I understand all the mental aspects of the game but how on earth do golfers drive their bodies to physical exertion as much as tennis players or any other athletes?. For goodness sakes, all they do is stand in one place and hit tiny white balls into holes in the ground.

Some golfers can't even be bothered to walk and instead have little cars that drive them around. Everything in that game is catered. They don’t even carry their own golf clubs and instead have a caddie do most of the physical work.

I will acknowledge golf as a cerebral game and that it takes intense focus and concentration. But so does chess but I don’t think anyone would dare call it a sport (though I’ve had some intense chess matches myself and I know first hand how mentally exhausting it can be).

I will admit that Tiger Woods has done a lot in making the game of golf far more exciting than it use to be and he truly is an amazing player of the game. If you doubt it, check out this series of his greatest shots here but can we really call him an athlete?

I don’t know if I would consider Roger Federer the No 1 athlete of the decade but without a doubt he is an athlete. So, I guess what the important question here is what makes an athlete? Is it the game they play, the amount of physical or mental prowess they exert, etc?

Wickmayer Free to Play Again!

Yanina Wickmayer's ban has finally been lifted by the International Tennis Federation, after having consulted the World Anti-Doping Agency. Today they confirmed that Wickmayer is eligible to start competing.

The world No.16 has a wildcard for ASB Classic in Auckland, and is hoping to get a wildcard to play in the Australian Open.

It's great to know that Wickmayer will be able to continue on her career. However, this whole incident brings up questions about the anti-doping rules that affect pro tennis players.

Should the anti-doping rules be more relaxed now or should they remain the same? Will Andre Agassi's recent confession of drug use have an effect on these rules? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Warhol's Polaroids of Famous Athletes

While skimming the art section of the New York Times, I found this great review of an exhibit called Jock Art. It is a collection of polaroids by Andy Warhol of famous athletes at the Danziger Projects gallery.

The polaroids were commissioned from one collector during the late 1970s and early ’80s. The simplicity of Warhol's method isn't only captivating but the straightforwardness of each portrait is ultimately revealing.

According to the review, "the tiny images have a purity and sincerity that belies the radiance and aura of greatness coming from the sitters."

The collection includes tennis greats, Chris Evert, John McEnroe, and the late Vitas Gerulaitis.

There is something eerily beautiful in these portraits taken at the height of the youthfulness and fame of these athletes.

The collection also includes Muhammed Ali, Dorothy Hamil, Pele, Jack Nicklaus, Wayne Gretsky, and O.J. Simpson.

Safina Pulls Out of Brisbane International

Today it was announced that Dinara Safina has pulled out of the Brisbane International tournament because of an ongoing back injury.

According to the tournament director, Steve Ayles, “Safina was very much looking forward to starting her year in Brisbane and it is a real shame that she will not be fit in time to attend.”

The Brisbane event is a key warm-up tournament for next month’s Australian Open as most of the top ten women players will show up along with Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin.

Do you think the toll taken on her body is the price she pays for trying to hold on to her No 1 ranking? What can we expect from her when she returns?

2010 Olympics to Add Mixed Doubles

It was announced today that Mixed Doubles will be included in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

While I'm not too excited of same-sex doubles, I'm a huge fan of mixed doubles, and think it should be played far more often. I have never understood why joint ATP/WTA events like Miami, Indian Wells and Beijing don't have mixed doubles. I think mixed doubles allow what men and women bring to the game. Watching a doubles match is far more interesting to me. It's more dynamic and fun to watch.

In any event, more mixed is good news, and should make for some pretty awesome action at the Olympics 2012.

My early picks to medal:

Andy Roddick and Serena Williams, United States -- These two seem to have pretty good chemistry, and their booming serves should serve them extremely well.

Novak Djokovic and Jelena Jankovic, Serbia --She and Djokovic were runners up at Hopman Cup a couple years ago, and seem to be the most likely pairing for Serbia in 2012.

Fernando Verdasco and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, Spain -- MJMS is one of the strongest players at net in the WTA, and if the Spanish men really want medals they should start lobbying now to be her partner in London. Verdasco has had a lot of success in Davis Cup doubles, so he's my pick for now.

Anime Meets Tennis in "Prince of Tennis"

Today, I found this great new anime series called "Prince of Tennis" According to Wikiepedia "it is a popular Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Takeshi Konomi"

The plot line "centers around Ryoma Echizen, a tennis prodigy who attends Seishun Academy, a private school famous for its strong tennis club and talented players. Ryoma quickly defeats numerous upperclassmen shortly after entrance to secure himself a spot as one of the team's regulars. In pursuit of their ultimate goal of winning the National Middle School Tennis Championship, members of the team make new friends while learning and mastering increasingly complex techniques. Ryoma also begins to develop his own style of tennis, and eventually realizes what the sport really means to him."

I watched the first episode on Youtube and I was immediately hooked on the series. I am both a huge anime and tennis fan, so seeing these two things that I love combined made me happy.

If you are familiar with anime then these series won't disappoint you. The tennis match scenes are dynamic and unnervingly epic. Think Dragon Ball Z meets tennis. The tennis balls shoot across the screen in plethora of bright colors.

Apparently, a live action movie was released in May 2006. From the trailer it seems interestng and fun. I am going to try to get my hands on it and perhaps review it for you guys.

Will Serena’s Meltdown Be Good for Tennis?

Last night I had dinner with my father and since he knew I worked for TennisExpress he wanted to know “What’s the deal with this Serena woman?” The question caught me off guard. Let me point out that my dad is in no way interested in tennis but even he had heard of what happened.

I proceeded to explain to him about her meltdown, her record-breaking fine and the controversy behind the whole ordeal. But my dad still couldn’t grasp what the big deal was. I had to explain to him the concept of sportsmanship and how tennis fans felt she didn’t live up to the standard that tennis players pride themselves on.

Now I neither condone or condemn Serena for her behavior but what interested me is the idea that Serena’s meltdown may have, even briefly, increased awareness of tennis to the public at large.

I mean here was my dad talking about “this woman, Serena,” my dad who prefers Mexican boxing over any sport. He even asked me to let him know when she’ll play again, so he can watch. Perhaps, more non-tennis fans will be driven out of curiosity to watch live tennis more.

I don’t know if Serena will be able to keep her cool for a full two years. She’s admitted to having a volatile temper when it comes to competing. And as you know, most people like to see a train wreck.

Do you think Serena’s meltdown will get more people to watch tennis on tv, even if it’s just out of curiosity to see if she might lose it again?

Spain's Victory and Nadal's New Nike Kicks

A big congrats to Spain for the absolute beat down of the Czech Republic and for going 5-0 with Rafael Nadal scoring a 6-3 6-4 win over Jan Hajek. Spain is the first nation to successfully defend the Davis Cup title since Sweden in 1998. Spain has also won eight successive Davis Cup ties for the first time in its history.

I'm sure this win will help Nadal + Verdasco heal the sting of going a combined 0-6 at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals last week. It's always great for the confidence to end the season on such a high note.

On a fashion note, did you guys notice these custom Nike Air Courtballistecs Nadal wore for this weekend's big Davis Cup final.

Au Revoire, Amelie

Two time Grand Slam winner Amelie Mauresmo announced her retirement today at the age of 30. Citing a lack of interest in training for 2010, Mauresmo held back tears during her press conference as she announced the news.

“I had to make a decision, which became evident in the last few months and weeks,” said Mauresmo whose last title on the women’s tour came in Paris at February’s Open de Gaz at the indoor Stade Coubertain.

“It's a bit sad, but this is the right decision. I was lucky enough to have an exceptional career and to experience very strong feelings on the court.”

Mauresmo was one of a handful of all-court players left on the women’s tour and many felt that Mauresmo’s natural athletic game was hampered at times by a lack of belief.

Her breakthrough Slam wins in 2006 at the age of 26 was inspiring to many as she achieved them in the later stages of her career. Mauresmo also endured her share of detractors and fans by being one of the few openly gay player on the tour.

The tennis world will miss her and the great poise she brought to the courts. What do you guys think about her retiring? Let us know what you think.

Even Modern Warfare 2 Can Come in Between an ATP Player and his Boo

It’s been revealed that Andy Murray’s girlfriend, Kim Sears, left him because he was playing too much Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3. Now that’s a new one in the celebrity circles, leaving your guy because he spends too much time on the PS3, and in Murray’s case it was up to seven hours a day!

Video games are a blast. And I admit even I’ve played Modern Warfare 2 and the game lives up to the hype: The graphics and gameplay are jaw-dropping. But if you are a top tennis player trying to win your home London year-end championships and trying to chase down Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the rankings (did I mention that you haven’t won a Slam yet?), you are not helping your cause by spending up to seven hours or more a day smoking the bad guys.

Luckily for Andy Murray, he’s got money and he stays at nice hotels in exotic locales, because without that “bait”, it’s tough for a guy like him with a video game addiction to land girls like Kim Sears.

I know Murray has quite the entourage though clearly not enough because someone on his crew needs to have the courage to yank the controller away, it’s not helping.

In his defense, Murray is now rumored to be dating Miss Scotland. Hope she’s a gamer!
